Andrea Thornock is an incredible voice and speech coach.  Her teaching abilities in vocal improvement and speech coaching have changed both my professional and personal life.  I was looking for someone who could change the way I spoke.  Andrea was able to identify and correct the tone, pitch and volume of my voice.

Andrea Thornock is an inspirational teacher, mentor and friend. I studied voice with Ms. Thornock just over 5 years ago with the intention of simply developing my vocal talent. In addition to assessing my vocal ability, developing my vocal and aural skills, and introducing me to some wonderful repertoire, Ms. Thornock took an avid interest in helping me to achieve my hidden dream: to study music seriously in a university degree program. (With the goal of practicality in mind, I previously had opted to study something other than music for my undergraduate degree.) Ms. Thornock opened a life-changing door for me, as she shared her expertise-the ins and outs, ups and downs-of the professional vocal world. Beyond guiding me vocally, she helped me prepare for auditions. One example of her dedication was when she discovered that I had not heard a recording of one of the pieces I was learning for an audition, she researched and found a recording of that song by an artist whose vocal quality was similar to mine! Hearing the recording, and more importantly being introduced to an artist whom I could strive to emulate, gave me artistic insights, and a stronger feeling of confidence as I walked into my audition. These sorts of details Andrea has a special ability to address.

After I was accepted to a graduate program in vocal performance on full-scholarship, she congratulated me with unbridled enthusiasm; my joy was hers as well! As the time approached for the beginning of my studies, she made sure I was prepared for the theory exams by drilling me on sight-reading and ear-training techniques. Her specialized knowledge and thorough musical training were invaluable to my confident approach to and ultimate success at integrating musical theory and practice.

I now have a master of music degree in vocal performance and am a working musician, growing my own private vocal studio, as well as conducting choruses and teaching musical theatre. I am now also on the adjunct voice faculty of a community college. I have musically accomplished more than I would have ever imagined. I am on a path of developing my own musical possibilities, and creating new dreams. Indeed, it is through my association with Andrea Thornock that I am able to "follow my dream!"

Ms. Thornock brings incredible energy into each lesson and is a tremendous voice instructor and personal coach. She has broadened my range, tightened my discipline, and stretched me to new heights personally, which has raised my confidence significantly. My vocal improvement is not only noticed by my family, but also by my church choir director, and people in the congregation who hear me sing solos periodically.

With her expert tutelage, I achieved my goal of auditioning for and being accepted into the Mormon Choir of Washington, DC much earlier than I had anticipated. I had thought this would only be possible after about five years of instruction. However, with Ms. Thornock as my devoted guide, I was accepted into the choir two years earlier than I had dreamed.

"Follow Your Dream Vocal Lyceum" certainly lives up to its name!

Andrea Thornock was my private voice teacher for four years, and I am very pleased with the instruction I received from her. She is an excellent voice teacher and I recommend her to anyone! Ms. Thornock was my first voice teacher, and she provided me with a well-rounded foundation for singing for the rest of my life. Not only did she teach me all the basics, but she exceeded the norm by making sure I was an intelligent singer who could read, analyze and comprehend the music I was performing.

Ms. Thornock is very knowledgeable about all the different aspects of singing. She knows how to describe everything to her students in such a way that they can understand completely.

Ms. Thornock is also a wonderful mentor and friend. She is a very caring and supportive person who helped me through tough decisions, competitions, and auditions. She also taught me about the life, career, and business of the opera world.

With Ms. Thornock's expertise and focused preparation, I participated in many singing programs, including: The Washington Opera Institute for Young Singers, Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Program, and the Virginia Governor's School. Through her careful guidance, I am now a freshman studying vocal performance at Boston University's School of Fine Arts.

In conclusion, I highly recommend Ms. Andrea Thornock as a voice teacher. She will motivate you to be your very best and give you everything you need for a career in singing!

Sincerely,
Catherine Meyers

From a very young age (4 years old), my daughter, Casey has wanted to be a singer. Not just any singer. She wanted to dance and sing with Gene Kelly in a broadway show. Well, we all know that she won't get to dance and sing with Gene, but with the help, encouragement and guidance of her "vocal coach", Andrea Thornock, she very well may have the opportunity to be a Broadway star!

Two and a half years ago, at age 8, when no one else would take a young enthusiastic singer like Casey, Andrea did. She took her in and taught her how to improve her voice, use it to its full capacity and God-given talent without hurting it. Casey's voice has continued to improve, she has poise and self-esteem to boot. But along with that coaching, Andrea has given my
daughter even more! She has given her the opportunity to fullfill many of her dreams. With Andrea's gentle push, Casey auditioned for the national touring company of "Annie" in New York and actually got a call-back! Andrea also helped her to prepare wonderful pieces, including an Italian aria to use at an audition for the Washington Opera Kids Camp, where she was accepted and completed a wonderful 4 week program with them this summer. It concluded with a performance of the opera "The Thunder of Horses" at the Kennedy Center where Andrea watched from the front row! She didn't have to be there, but it meant so much to Casey and to the whole family. Andrea has also helped Casey to prepare for her performances at minor league ball parks where she has sung the "National Anthem".

All of this is very important to Casey. She is improving her voice, she is performing, she is learning about music and having fun. However, I feel that one of the most important qualities that Andrea possesses is not only her ability to teach people how to sing more beautifully....but also her ability to make people believe that their dreams CAN come true and then help them to REALIZE those dreams. Andrea is a wonderful singer, teacher, coach, motivator and person who helps others to "follow their dreams"!

She taught me to dramatically improve my projection and clarity.  My supervisors, family, friends and colleagues all have noticed my vocal improvements.  More importantly, through Andrea’s unique one-on-one personal attention I have regained confidence in public speaking.

Andrea has clearly demonstrated her professional coaching abilities.  However she has also shown kindness and willingness to work on personal projects.  Through my lessons with Andrea I have been able to make and enjoy oral presentations.  I would recommend Andrea Thornock to anyone, but especially to professionals, that are seeking to improve their briefing or oral speaking skills.
